Pregnancy Diary: Second Trimester - 24 Weeks

16th December 2016

At 24 weeks pregnant my little Pip is about the size of an aubergine and we have reached our first viability milestone! She (yes, it's a girl!) is just about 13 inches long and weighs around 1.5lbs. Here's what's been going on during my 24th week of pregnancy with baby number three.

Baby Development

A lot is happening this week! First of all we have reached our first viability milestone, due to Pip's lung development! Her lungs are making significant development now due to all the practice breathing she has been doing and she will soon start to produce surfactant. Surfactant is the substance that will help her lungs to expand and work once she is born.

She is also developing her taste buds which means she might be able to taste the food I am eating through the amniotic fluid - how amazing is that! I'm told that this can impact her preferences in later life, so I'll be sure to eat lots of different things so she is exposed to different flavours.

Body Changes

I have noticed that my belly is really veiny. Like, super veiny! It looks like a road map with all these thick blue veins shining through my skin. I assume this is due to my belly being really stretched now. So far I still have no stretch marks, but I do have a quite an itchy belly. I'm using quite mild skincare products at the moment. I tend to do so anyway but I am being more careful now as my skin gets so sensitive during pregnancy, and the cold weather won't help with that either.

Pregnancy Symptoms

As I mentioned last week I am still feeling quite tired and sluggish, I am beginning to wonder if it is my iron levels. They were really strong at the start of the pregnancy, so much that I was told I didn't need to take supplements. I have taken them anyway though, because I know our need for iron increases a lot during pregnancy. I am still loving satsumas and orange juice, I can't get enough!

Antenatal Appointments

I don't have any appointments now until 28 weeks. It feels quite long between appointments, but the time is actually flying by. A little too quickly!

Looking Ahead

I am doing a Natal Hypnotherapy course online to help me prepare for the labour and birth. I used the VBAC CDs during my last pregnancy and feel they really helped, so I hope the full course will be even more helpful! You can read more about my decision to do hypnobirthing in this post
