Hermitage Rd

My friend Lauren is off work as it’s the school holidays so on Monday we met up for lunch at one of my favourite local places: Hermitage Rd. Bar and Restaurant in Hitchin.

We both chose the pulled pork, apple & rhubarb compote sandwich (£6) which came with a small portion of fries. I shared mine with Baby N. For dessert Lauren chose the ice cream (£4.50) – a scoop each of peanut butter, vanilla and strawberry – while I had the warm chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream (it should have been peanut butter ice cream but I changed it) and salted caramel (£6). I didn’t share this with Baby N; he had a rice cake. I’m sure he enjoyed it as much as I did the brownie!

My friend Lauren and I went to Hermitage Rd. Bar & Restaurant in Hitchin for brunch on Sunday. I posted about their coffee bar the other day, which is one of the top 50 according to The Independent, and last year I posted about their amazing Sunday roast. Lauren and I had been for Sunday roast last month when we spotted their yummy looking brunch menu, so we booked a table.

I love menus like this – just the right number of dishes. Too much choice overwhelms me! I chose the cheese on toast with wild mushrooms, spinach and duck egg. Lauren chose the same, but she swapped the duck egg for bacon and wanted everything separate on the plate. She also didn’t want a lot of cheese. The waitress was lovely and was happy to accommodate all this. I think mine looks better, do you agree? For drinks we had a glass of orange juice each, I had a pot of tea and Lauren had a latte.

Our bill came to £18, which is such a steal for two big dishes and four drinks. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was lovely, really relaxed. Even Baby N got to sample a bit of my cheese on toast – can you believe he is nearly 7 months old? The time is going so quickly! I noticed that there were a few others with babies and small children, it seems that Sunday brunch is a lot more family friendly than Sunday lunch.

I can’t wait to go back to Hermitage Rd. Bar & Restaurant again for brunch, I’ve asked Ian if we can go this weekend. I’d quite like to try the baked eggs, although I’d be tempted to try one of the other variations of cheese on toast. Yum!

In my hometown of Hitchin, there is a coffee bar that was recently reviewed in The Independent 50 best coffee shops. I’ve been to Hermitage Rd. Bar & Restaurant for meals several times but had never ventured into their coffee bar. After Lexi tweeted about their amazing salted caramel cookies I decided to get my decaf mocha there instead of Starbucks for a change – and so I could try the cookie!

My coffee was very carefully made in full view not hidden behind the machine. It wasn’t as chocolatey as I normally like my mocha to be but it was a lovely coffee and went hand-in-hand with the delicious chewy salted caramel cookie from The Fine Cookie Co. My coffee was £2.50, the cookie was £1.50.

Pricewise it’s a teensy bit more expensive than Starbucks where I usually go but Hermitage Rd. has a loyalty card to make sure it doesn’t lose your business to Starbucks, Costa or Caffe Nero which are all minutes away. Every seventh coffee (or tea) is free. I like free.

I do like Hermitage Rd. It’s a gorgeous looking restaurant and the food is fantastic. However, the last time I went for Sunday lunch my friend and I were really disappointed in the service we received. I’m popping in again on Sunday for brunch, hopefully it will be better.
