Mama Style: 4 Ways to Transition from Summer to Autumn Fashion

Autumn. My favourite season of the year! The season of pumpkin spice, chunky knits, crunchy leaves and hot chocolate, and the countdown to the festive period begins. It's the best time of the year for fashion in my opinion; I love nothing more than layering up in snuggly cardis and wearing richer, warmer shades. You can easily keep your summer favourites and add a few things so those gorgeous dresses you loved during sunshine season will last you through the cooler months, too.

4 Ways to Transition from Summer to Autumn Fashion

1. Add tights

A friend and I used to always get really excited about the weather cooling down, as it meant one thing - tights season! My favourites are opaque black tights, as they pretty much go with anything. Pop some on under a summer dress and voila, you have an autumn outfit right there! I also love cable knit tights, they look great under stretchy mini skirts, as do coloured and patterned tights.

2. Love those layers

It seems so obvious but too often I've relegated a tunic top or a dress to the back of the wardrobe thinking it's far too cold for them now, when by adding some layers they can still last through autumn and winter, too. Pair a tunic top with some skinny jeans and pop on a cardigan, or add a lightweight scarf and a denim jacket with a dress.

3. Boots are your BFF

As well as wearing tights pretty much from September through to February, I also live in boots and Converse throughout autumn and winter. Seriously, summer dresses or shorts with some tights and chunky boots are an autumn fashion staple. The softer and prettier the dress, the edgier the boots!

4. Hold on to your maxi skirts

Don't put your maxi skirts and dresses away just yet! Instead of wearing them with vest tops, you just need to add some longer sleeves. I like to pair them up with a knitted jumper and a belt; the belt adds definition to my waist so I'm not being swallowed up in layers and billowing fabric.

What are your top autumn style tips?

With thanks to JD Williams for sending the dresses for this post.
