Today is day 77 of the 90 Day Spending Ban, I can’t believe the end is so close! I have just one simple rule, I cannot buy something new if I have that type of product already in my stash. You can read Update #1 here, Update #2 here, Update #3 here and Update #4 here.

I’ve got through quite a lot in the last few weeks. Shampoo, conditioner, hand wash, concealer, mascara, body butter, body scrub and hand cream.

From my stash I picked out a Lush Candy Cane Soap (from a Christmas gift set), YSL Touche Eclat, YSL Shocking Mascara, L’Occitane Verbena Body Lotion (from a gift set I got after having my baby), Lush Sandy Santa Sugar Scrub (also from a Christmas gift set) and Taaj Creme Mains Delhicates Hand Cream (I got this in the January Birchbox).

I had no shampoo or conditioner left in my stash so picked up some from the Naked Smooth range, and luckily for me my other half paid for them so I didn’t break my spending ban! Well, not for those anyway. I haven’t painted my nails since my baby arrived in November (!) as I know they wouldn’t get time to dry before I need to change a nappy. So I treated myself to a bottle of Seche Vite. I did use my Boots Advantage Card points though! Even with this little spend I have saved £50.25 this update; the total saved so far is £225.63!

In my recent mission for perfect brows, I’ve got my hands on one of the best tweezers in the world: the Tweezerman Slant Tweezer. Chosen as a ‘Best of Beauty’ winner by InStyle editors for 14 years in a row, I can’t believe I have never tried this tweezer before!

Tweezerman Slant Tweezer
Tweezerman Slant Tweezer 2
Tweezerman Slant Tweezer 3

Made from stainless steel and with hand-filed tips this tweezer has the perfect soft, springy grip and catches the hair every time. I use the slanted side for plucking a general area, then turn the tweezers over (so the point is underneath) for more precise tweezing and for getting that specific hair right there. Make sure you keep the plastic tip that comes with your tweezers and put it back on when you’ve finished plucking as I find this helps to keep them super sharp and precise.

You can get the Tweezerman Slant Tweezer from feelunique.com for £20.00. After road-testing them myself I can understand why the beauty industry loves them so much, they deliver great results every time. With a lifetime guarantee and a free sharpening policy they are a such a great investment.

Tweezerman Swarovski Crystal Slant Tweezer
Tweezerman also have some very exciting news: they have launched their first ever ambassador campaign with gorgeous American alpine skier Lindsey Vonn. To celebrate, they are giving you the chance to win amazing Tweezerman goodies such as the beautiful Swarovski Crystal Tweezer, pictured above, which is worth £79.00.

For a chance to win all you need to do is go to the ‘Are You Feeling Plucky?’ section on the Tweezerman website: www.tweezerman.co.uk/lindseyvonn and enter your email address. It could not be easier and there is one given away every week! You can also find out more about Lindsey and her favourite Tweezerman products, read her beauty tips and see Tweezerman’s first ever TV advert! I love the tip about using some water before plucking to soften the hairs so they come out more easily.

Do you have these tweezers? What is your best tip for perfect brows?

Disclosure: I was sent the Tweezerman Slant Tweezer for free for review purposes, however all thoughts and opinion remain my own. With thanks to Tweezerman UK.

There seems to a few mixed feelings on this month’s beauty box from Birchbox. I was really pleased with the items I received; well, there was one that I wasn’t overly excited about.

Birchbox 2013 march beauty box contents (2)

Birchbox 2013 march beauty box contents (1)

Role Models is the theme of the March beauty box from Birchbox; here’s what I got in mine:

RMK Cleansing Balm – This rose-scented balm smells amazing! I’ve never tried anything from RMK before but this seems a great product to start with. I love a good cleanser. This is a 25g tub.

Molton Brown Valbonne Perfume – Molton Brown create some of the loveliest fragrances around. This 2ml sample has notes of bergamot, orange flower, mimosa, rose, orris, vetiver and leather. It smells quite masculine at first but after it settled it’s much nicer.

Laura Geller Inkwell Waterproof Gel Liner – I received this eyeliner in black. I’m more excited about the brush to be honest; I think it’s genius having the brush in the lid! I’ve never tried a gel liner before, I hope I’m not useless. This is 2.5g.

La Sultane de Saba Body Lotion with Argan oil – This is the product I’m not that impressed by. I just don’t get on with argan oil in skincare. I love it for my hair, just not my skin! This is a 30ml bottle.

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream – This smells like Carmex and feels a little like it too! I don’t think I’d use this on my face as it’s quite thick. It works nicely on lips though. This is a 3g tube.

Sanctuary Active Reverse Facial 30 Day Thermal Transformation Mask – This is a ‘beauty extra’; a two-step mask that promises results after one use. There is a single-use sachet of each step (3.5ml and 7ml) so we’ll see if it delivers.

Lindt Lindor Mini Heart Tin – This is a ‘lifestyle extra’. I scoffed the lot straight away! Yummy!

Apart from the body lotion I love my box. What do you think of this month’s box? If you like it and want to sign up, please feel free to use my referral link: http://birchbox.co.uk/?raf=674. The box costs £10 per month plus p+p.

I had a £50 gift voucher from my last birthday so I went to have my eyebrows done (I LOVE how they now look!) and used the remaining balance of the voucher to buy one of the HD Brows Eye & Brow Palettes so that I could maintain my fab new eyebrows at home.

HD Brows Eye and Brow palette
HD Brows EYEBROW palette

My eyebrows are really sparse which looks odd against my dark hair, so I am always having to tint them and fill them in to make them look more defined. I have tried so many eyebrow pencils and powders, and usually end up chucking them away as they’re not quite right – either too dark or too warm for my complexion. I’ve even mixed together eye shadows so that I can get the shade I want.

After my HD Brows treatment Amita showed me how to fill in my brows using the Vamp palette to create a more defined look for a night out, so I knew that these shades would work for me. There are four shades – a nude (3) to highlight the brow bone, a carbon (2) which can be used as an eyeliner, a dark brown (4) and a rich brown (4) - the browns can be used as eye shadows as well as on your brows.

I mostly use the brown shades and just use them on my eyebrows. Rich brown is the warmer, softer shade and Dark is bold and ashy. I vary every day on how I use this palette; sometimes I use one of them, sometimes I use both. It really depends on what sort of look I want to go for. A little goes a long way, the swatches below were literally tiny dabs! You can create a really soft natural look or you can create a more strong defined look, it’s so versatile. You could even create a Scouse brow if you really wanted too! I tend to go for defined yet natural.

The little brush is great too; to be honest I thought I wouldn’t like it as normally the little brushes in palettes are too fiddly for me. I was surprised at how handy the brush is. I use the blunter end to stroke the powder through my brows and the softer end to blend the colour. I love the staying power of these powders. I can do my brows first thing in the morning and by the time I’m going to bed they still look as good.

I’m so pleased that I have finally found my perfect eye brow product; I could probably go without the nude and the carbon shades but the two browns are what I have been looking for for a long time. I only wish I had bought this palette sooner, it would have saved a lot of wasted products!

This week I’ve been trying out one of the fab eye shadow duos from the new Ladies Who Lunch range by Smooch Cosmetics that launched this month (rrp £9.50).

There are six palettes in the collection and each features two complementary shades: The Wag, The Social Butterfly, Posh Tottie, Naughty School Girl, Trophy Wife and Morticia. I’ve been trying out Posh Tottie which has a pink shade and a violet shade.

The eye shadow palette comes in a black cardboard box with white lace effect detailing. The palette itself has a rubberised feel to it much like the lipstick I reviewed here. It feels very sturdy and well designed, I’m confident that this won’t end up broken in the bottom of my handbag! It has a good sized mirror inside the lid which is great for touch ups on the go. It doesn’t come with any applicators, but that’s fine with me as I never use those diddy foam applicators that come with a lot of eye shadows.

The pink shade is the brighter of the two; it’s a pearlescent soft rose pink. The violet is the more sultry shade in the duo; it’s like a grey-toned lilac. While these are both definitely powder shadows, the pink shade feels almost creamy when applied and gives a dense look straight away. The violet has a more “dry” feel to it and needs building up quite a lot.

I’ve been using the pink all over my eyelids and the violet on the crease and outer corners to define. The pink also works well dotted in the inner corner of the eye to give a more “wide awake” look (something I need a lot of help with these days)! You can easily turn your look from day to night by applying more violet to create more of a smoky eye.

These eye shadows have good lasting power; I have found they’ve stayed put all day without creasing and that’s with only some foundation as a base. I imagine you’d get even better lasting power if you used an eye shadow primer too.

Disclosure: I was sent a Smooch Eye Shadow Duo for free for review purposes, however all thoughts and opinion remain my own.

You might have noticed that I have a bit of a thing for oils, particularly face oils. Sandra posted on her blog about Sweet Cheeks Face Oil from The London Oil Company and I was intrigued; it sounded wonderful. So when Vivien from The London Oil Company asked if I would like to try a sample myself, of course I said “yes, please!”

Oils from The London Oil Company are all hand-crafted in small batches and arrive beautifully packaged. They are made with completely natural ingredients, free from preservatives and absolutely not tested on animals! I love the product names; as well as face oils there are body oils such as Coffee Bum Bum and Morning Glory.

The London Oil Company

The London Oil Company Sweet Cheeks Face Oil 3

Sweet Cheeks Face Oil contains Organic Unrefined Avocado Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Organic Rosehip Seed Oil, Sea Buckthorn Oil, Organic Unrefined Jojoba Oil and Coffee Essential Oil which help to nourish and protect your skin.

I have been using this oil first thing in the morning after cleansing and before moisturising. To me it smells like warm rye bread as you apply the oil, then once absorbed you can’t smell anything at all. I put a drop on each cheek, my forehead, my chin and my neck then massage in. You only need to use such a small amount each time, I can see this bottle lasting a good while. It would be fab if the bottle had a dropper attached as that would make application so much easier.

The weather has gone so cold again so this oil is giving my skin an extra nourishing boost and protection against the harsh elements. The oil has a slightly amber tint to it which can give your skin a sun-kissed glow. It’s not drastic like you would get from a bronzer; it’s more of a subtle radiance. Since using this oil I have had friends and family tell me how well I look, which is amazing when you remember that I am mama to a teething 4 month old baby!

You can buy Sweet Cheeks Face Oil here in 30ml and 60ml bottles (£14 and £22). You can also try a 10ml sample bottle for £4.

In a much more timely fashion this time, here’s a run-through of the products I finished last month!

February Empties

Montagne Jeunesse Passion Peel Off Face Mask – I really like this refreshing peel off face mask; you can read the full review here.

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Reconstructor Deep Conditioner – You can’t go wrong with this intensive treatment. It’s so quick and easy to use, I’ve loved this stuff for years and will probably always use it!

WEI Jujube Age Control Serum – I got this little tube in January’s Birchbox. It feels great on the skin, but the sample was a little too small to be able to use it long enough to see if it delivers real results plus it smells a bit like camembert cheese, so I won’t be buying it.

Aveda Smooth Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner – These both came in a She Said Beauty beauty box last year. I like them but I wasn’t really wowed by them.

Osmo Berber Oil Hair Treatment – I reviewed this here. I’m quite sad that I’ve used it all up as I really like this oil! I have a few more oils to use up but I’m sure I’ll be buying this in the future.

Vaseline Intensive Rescue Soothing Hand Cream – My hands are really dry and chapped at the moment from the cold weather, heating and constant hand washing (I have a young baby!) so I am getting through lots of hand cream. Despite the name this was a fairly light one. A good one to have in your handbag or desk at work as it’s easily absorbed but I need something richer at the moment.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula: Massage Lotion for Stretch Marks & Firming Butter – More “mummy” samples either received through the post or in Bounty packs. I didn’t get stretch marks but have been using these on my tummy anyway!

Dr Bragi Bio Marine Exfoliant: I got two sachets of this exfoliant in September’s Joliebox beauty box. It has really fine particles and gently exfoliated my skin leaving it soft and smooth, ready for a face mask. Fab stuff!

Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask – LOVED this face mask! I got it in the Selfridges Beauty Box in September and had been saving it for a special treat. I will be posting a full review soon.

Weleda One-Step Cleanser & Toner – I got this in a giveaway prize but I’m sad to say I didn’t like it. It wasn’t great at removing make-up and I wasn’t keen on the smell which was like ouzo!

Molton Brown Naran Ji Hand Wash – Another from the set I got at Christmas. Smells fabulous, all neroli and grapefruit. But I think I might be allergic to these hand washes as eczema has suddenly flared up on my hand. A bit gutting as they smell so nice. I wouldn’t ever buy them though, too pricey!

Charlie Pink Body Spray – This is a fruity sweet smelling body spray but not too strong, so it doesn’t clash with your perfume. I got this at Christmas and I would pick it up again.

Organic Systems Aqua Boost Shampoo – I got this as a ‘thank you’ from a PR lady that I sent some Peanut Chunky KitKats to (she couldn’t find them where she lived)! Unfortunately I didn’t get on very well with this shampoo as it made my hair feel heavy and weighed down.

Pantence Volume & Body Conditioner – This massive 400ml bottle cost me the grand sum of 47p! I’m a bit indifferent towards Pantene, I’ve never been drawn to their products but when I saw them on sale in Superdrug for silly money I just couldn’t resist. It’s actually quite a good conditioner, it left my hair feeling soft and shiny and easy to style. I’d buy it again, especially if I see it for 47p!

I love using body scrubs in the shower and the Lush Sugar Scrub Shower Scrub is a favourite.  Made with sugar (obviously!), ginger and fennel it boosts circulation and softens any bumpy areas.

To me it smells more of lavender or rosemary, it’s quite an unusual and refreshing scent. I dampen my skin in the shower then rub the scrub onto my hands, then rub my hands on my skin. I have used the scrub directly on my body but it feels a little too rough for my liking. I tend to focus using this on my thighs and upper arms as I tend to get bumpy skin there. It really helps to smooth my skin.

The annoying thing about this scrub is that is dissolves really quickly on contact with water. It’s not really surprising as it is sugar after all. You just have to make sure that you have an empty pot or container to store it between showers else it will all just disappear down the plughole!

As long as you store it properly you’ll get a good few uses out of each scrub, so it makes the price tag of £2.75 for 100g quite a bargain.

Baker Days Letterbox Cake

Can you believe that this yummy Baker Days Letterbox Cake was sent to me by post?! When the lovely people at Baker Days asked me if I’d like to review one of their letterbox cakes I was intrigued. Would it make it through the postal system in one piece? It did! Would it break as it landed on my doormat? It didn’t! Would it still be fresh when it got here? It was!
Starting at £14.99 including delivery, there are over 400 designs and 5 cake flavours to choose from:  Madeira, lemon, fruit, carrot and double chocolate chip. I got the Madeira cake and it was delicious! You can personalise your cake with a message and can even upload a photo to appear on your cake.  The cake arrived in a cute little keepsake tin (which keeps it fresh for 10-12 days) as well as balloons, a party horn, candles and a little gift card.

With all the various box postal services around at the moment – coffee boxes, snack boxes, beauty boxes – I had wondered how long it would be until someone came up with a way of sending cakes by post. I think this is a fantastic idea and perfect for sending to a friend or relative if you can’t actually be there to celebrate a special occasion with them.
A friend’s birthday is coming up soon and even though I will see her for her birthday I might just send her a letterbox cake as a fun surprise to put a smile on her face. Who doesn’t love cake!

Disclosure: I was sent a Baker Days Letterbox Cake for free for review purposes, however all thoughts and opinion remain my own. With thanks to Baker Days for my sample.
